What Can We Learn from Christian Missionary Stories?
Christian missionary stories reveal how God’s love reaches the darkest corners of human experience, bringing hope and restoration. Persistent faith and selfless service can transform individuals, families and entire communities. One such remarkable story involves a family grappling with strife and addiction and the faithful service of a GFA missionary.[1]
Kai and Eira lived in a small village, working hard to raise their five children. Kai farmed while Eira managed their home, and together, they appeared to lead a stable life. But beneath the surface, their family was in turmoil, mainly due to their youngest son, Glin. His drinking and rebellious behavior brought chaos to their home, creating constant tension and worry.
Glin’s destructive habits escalated over time. He sold the family’s livestock without permission and once threatened to burn down their house during a heated argument with his brothers. The incident nearly became tragic, saved only by the intervention of their neighbors. Despite these close calls, Glin showed no sign of changing his ways. His parents were heartbroken and feared for their family’s future.
Their relationship with their neighbor, Pastor Iwan, a GFA missionary, added to their turmoil. Like most in their village, Kai and Eira adhered to the traditional religion and viewed Pastor Iwan’s presence with suspicion. They actively opposed him, spreading rumors and avoiding interaction whenever possible. Yet Pastor Iwan remained patient, trusting that God’s timing would eventually bring change.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly. One day, Glin knocked on Pastor Iwan’s door while selling pork door-to-door. Recognizing the troubled young man, the pastor welcomed him with kindness. He served him lunch and spoke words of encouragement, urging him to leave behind his destructive habits. For the first time, Glin seemed willing to listen.
What began as a single act of compassion soon developed into a meaningful friendship. Despite his parents’ disapproval of their neighbor, Glin continued visiting Pastor Iwan, who counseled and prayed for him. Over time, Glin’s behavior noticeably improved. He broke his addiction to alcohol, reconciled with his brothers and began contributing to the family in positive ways.
Kai and Eira could not deny the transformation they witnessed in their son. They eventually learned about his friendship with Pastor Iwan and, though initially reluctant, began attending church out of curiosity. Gradually, they experienced the love of Christ and embraced the faith, bringing peace and unity to their home.
