Helping the Poor

Donate to the Poor

GFA provides more than 30 different ways to donate to the poor. Giving to others with a sense of gratitude feels like a blessing. So, what do you feel most blessed by today? Is it having clean water to drink and cook with? A blanket to keep you warm? A skill that generates income or a sense of purpose in your life? The fact that you can read and write?

Most of us have so much, and in our materialistic world, we sometimes take for granted our most basic blessings. But when we donate to the poor, it reminds us of how we’re all connected to those in need, as well as of the abundance we have in our lives—from clean water and private toilets to access to education and nutritious food.

Here are ways GFA is helping the poor and ways you can multiply the impact we have on the most needy:

Literacy and vocational training

In South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Arab countries, illiteracy rates range from 40% to 50% of the population.1 Worldwide, about 781 million adults cannot read or write2 and 250 million children are illiterate.3

GFA’s literacy projects, like our Women’s Literacy Program, help mothers take care of their children by teaching them how to read warning labels, how to read the Bible and how to do basic math so they aren’t cheated in the marketplace.

Our Child Sponsorship Program provides community-wide solutions that help children and their families break the cycle of poverty.

Vocational Training Classes give people the skills they need to be tailors, welders or candlemakers or help them obtain better jobs so they can break the cycle of poverty.

Basic necessities: a roof, blankets, mosquito nets

Thatched roofs don’t offer much protection from pounding monsoon rains, so GFA gives families lightweight, yet sturdy, tin roofs under which to stay safe and dry. For just $225, you can literally give a family a roof over their head.

Mosquitos transmit malaria in many parts of the world, but a simple, $10 net can give a family a lifetime of restful, and safe, sleep. Likewise, a $25 blanket can keep people warm in freezing cold climates.
