Ambassador for Christ

What Is an Ambassador for Christ?

To answer the question, “What is an ambassador for Christ,” we must first understand the word ambassador. What comes to mind when you hear the word? Do you think about “an important official who works in a foreign country representing his or her own country there and who is officially accepted in this position by that country?”[1]

In secular diplomacy, an ambassador serves as the official representative of their home nation in a foreign land. This person carries the authority of their government and speaks on its behalf. The apostle Paul drew from this well-known role when he described believers as representatives of heaven in a world that does not yet know God.

In a general sense, an ambassador acts as an intermediary between two countries. The Greek word translated “ambassador” in 2 Corinthians 5:20 is presbeúō, meaning someone who is trusted and authorized to speak on behalf of another. In 2 Corinthians 5:17-20, the apostle Paul adopts and expands this meaning to explain what it means to be an ambassador for Christ. Paul writes, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ God making his appeal through us.” He explains that all believers are ambassadors, “as though God were making his appeal through us.”

Biblical Foundation: The Ministry of Reconciliation

An ambassador for Christ represents Christ’s interests to the world. We are the intermediaries between God and the people who do not know Him. God has entrusted believers with the message of reconciliation. According to 2 Corinthians 5:18, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” He enlists us for His service, and we carry His Good News to people who have not yet heard it.

The Holy Spirit empowers this calling. Believers do not serve in their own strength but through the enabling work of the Spirit, who convicts the world concerning sin and righteousness. This partnership between human ambassadors and divine power makes the message of Christ effective across cultural and geographic boundaries. Paul urges, “We implore you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God.”

This appeal reveals the heart of the ambassador’s mission. The phrase “behalf of Christ” appears throughout Paul’s letters, emphasizing that messengers do not speak their own words but deliver the King’s message. The love of Christ compels this service. As 2 Corinthians 5:14 explains, Christ’s love controls those who understand that He died for all.

Representing a Holy God

To represent God is to reflect His character in speech and action. Ambassadors do not merely deliver information; they embody the values of the One who sent them. A secular ambassador who dishonors their nation loses credibility. Similarly, believers who claim to follow Christ but live contrary to His teaching undermine their message.

Paul understood this tension. He reminded the Corinthian church that messengers of a holy God must pursue holiness themselves. This does not mean perfection, but it does require integrity, compassion, and faithfulness. Ambassadors serve as visible representatives of an invisible King.

The role also brings the message of hope to those who are suffering. Christ’s ambassadors do not simply preach the gospel in words alone. They demonstrate God’s love through practical service, meeting physical needs while pointing people toward eternal hope.

GFA World: Ambassadors in Action

For many years, GFA World has been committed to supporting ambassadors for Christ in Africa and Asia. These regions contain some of the world’s most vulnerable communities, where poverty, lack of clean water, and limited access to education create cycles of hardship. In these regions, we train national missionaries and pastors to plant churches in areas where there aren’t any. They are also the hands and feet of Christ as they help meet the physical needs of people, for instance as they provide free income-generating tools or animals that help them break out of the cycle of poverty.

National workers understand local languages, customs, and cultural nuances in ways that outsiders cannot. This cultural fluency allows them to build trust and serve effectively in areas that may be restricted to Western missionaries. GFA-supported workers organize vocational training, including tailoring classes, that enable people to learn new trades and build sustainable livelihoods.

Meeting Practical Needs

In areas where most of the community serves as day laborers, giving people another income option can have a life-changing impact, and GFA pastors and missionaries are constantly on the look-out for people who need a helping hand from one of Christ’s ambassadors.

Day laborers often earn barely enough to feed their families each day. Illness, injury, or seasonal work shortages can push these households into crisis. Alternative income sources provide a buffer against these vulnerabilities. When a family has multiple ways to earn money, they gain stability and resilience.

Through the support of generous donors, GFA World provides gifts that can change lives, such as sewing machines and tailoring classes to impoverished women. Vocational training programs typically last six months, during which women learn to sew blouses, trousers, undergarments, and other practical items. With this new-found skill, women can sew for their family or start a small tailoring business. Sewing machines enable women to acquire a marketable skill that can be utilized from the comfort of their homes, opening doors to entrepreneurship and financial independence. This brings in income and helps meet the needs of their family. A little help from God’s ambassadors can be all that’s needed to promote a brighter future for a family.

The impact of these gifts extends beyond individual households. When women gain economic independence, they often invest in their children’s education and health. This creates a ripple effect, lifting entire communities out of poverty over time. Studies have shown that income-generating tools like sewing machines help families send children to school and pay medical bills, breaking cycles of poverty that have persisted for generations.

A Call to Partnership

Please partner with us—sponsor national missionaries who minister to people’s needs, invest in community development, and help families in need of care or during disasters. We have a special love for people in need, and it is our desire to minister to them and help them through our various ministries. The work of ambassadors for Christ requires sustained support from those who share a vision for transformation. Our focus and goal as a ministry is “to serve and minister to children, families and entire communities who are underserved and impoverished across Africa and Asia. Each aspect of service is motived by our love for Jesus.”[2]

Every believer has a role in this mission. Some are called to go, while others are called to send. Both roles are essential to fulfilling the Great Commission. Those who give financially make it possible for national workers to serve full-time, train new leaders, and respond to urgent needs. Partnership in this work is a tangible expression of faith in action.
