Scripture also addresses the motives behind giving. In Matthew 6, Jesus warns against performing acts of charity to be seen by others: “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven” (Matthew 6:1, NKJV).
He describes how hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets make a show of their giving — they have already received their reward in full through human applause. He said: “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38, NKJV). The apostle Paul pointed to giving as a source of blessing, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35, NKJV). This upside-down kingdom principle anchors Christian generosity — the giver receives something of eternal value in the act of giving. Scripture also teaches that believers are created for generosity. As Ephesians 2:10 says: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (NKJV). Every act of giving is part of the works which God prepared for His people to carry out.[4]
This eternal perspective reshapes how believers view their resources. What is given away on earth for the sake of others is not lost — it is stored where it can never be taken.
Jesus made this point vividly. In Luke 12:33-34 He said: “Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (NKJV). The call to store up treasures in heaven reframes giving not as loss but as investment — what believers release on earth becomes lasting wealth in God’s kingdom.[5]
