In many developing countries, adult illiteracy is a serious problem that impacts the whole family. The connection between illiteracy and poverty runs deep. Without the ability to read or write, parents are unable to apply for well-paying jobs and are often targeted by scam artists looking to prey on the illiterate, getting them to agree to bad contracts, resulting in a generational cycle of poverty.
Families caught in this cycle feel trapped, isolated, and powerless. The inability to afford educational resources only strengthens the grip of poverty. In addition, parents that cannot read may miss vital medical or safety instructions, which can result in health complications or accidents for themselves and their children. GFA World is passionate about helping break the cycles of poverty.
Through our adult literacy program, GFA World is helping transform the lives of individuals, their families, and communities by providing them with the skills and resources they need to learn to read and write. Reading and writing are some of the most liberating and empowering skills needed to escape poverty. When a parent learns to read and write, they are more likely to pass their appreciation for learning to their children, giving them a significant advantage in escaping the cycle of poverty.
The teachers of our literacy classes have witnessed the power of literacy in the lives of individuals and their families and are passionate about transforming lives. For as little as $25 you can give the gift of literacy to someone in need.
