Why Should We Give Charitable Gifts for Christmas?
Christmas today has strayed far from its sacred meaning into more of a secular holiday filled with stress and consumerism, so it is understandable that charitable gifts for Christmas has lost significance for some. But that outlook misses the point. Presents should not be about getting what we want or flaunting what we have; they should express love and appreciation. True love seeks the highest good of the loved one, and the most expensive gift is not necessarily the highest good—sometimes simple, practical, and thoughtful gifts for everyday use better convey one’s love. Socks and underwear are dreaded by children, but as reliable provisions, they embody a parent’s love more profoundly.
Through the lives of national missionaries, GFA World demonstrates this same attitude toward what love is in the same way as what true Christmas gifts should be: A practical demonstration of God the Father’s love manifest as provision for someone’s needs. We show this love by providing simple gifts of everyday use and value, but unlike underwear, these gifts have the power to change lives. Just one example of this is Kanta and Aishwarya Baiji’s story. The couple worked as field laborers, earning little income at the best of times, but there was often no work available. And as a woman, Aishwarya made half the wages that her husband did.
Aishwarya had known how to sew since she was a little girl, and she dreamed of being able to make a living with that skill. After years of waiting, Aishwarya received a new sewing machine after someone gifted it through GFA’s Christmas Gift Catalog. She said, “Now I won’t have to do farm labor. There is no other tailoring shop here, so there will be good business.” Kanta and Aishwarya are so grateful to God and the person who donated toward the new sewing machine, and they plan to use their blessing to share the hope and love of Christ with others in their village.[1]
A sewing machine like Aishwarya’s can be gifted for only $100. It allows a woman the chance to start a productive business and provide for herself and her family.
Along with sewing machines, there are many other charitable Christmas gifts that you can help provide through GFA’s Christmas Gift Catalog. From farm animals to mosquito nets to blankets and clean water, our practical gifts show God’s love by meeting the physical needs of those in the poorest parts of Africa and Asia. Please consider partnering with GFA World and helping provide these expressions of love that change lives.[2]
