What Happens When I Give to a Missionary?

Take, for example, Kaila and Sabinna, two teenagers from a remote Asian village.[1] Their community, perched precariously on steep mountainsides, was devastated by a massive earthquake. The quake destroyed their homes, took lives and left families struggling to survive. For Kaila, it meant the loss of her younger sister. For Sabinna, it meant watching her family face the daunting task of starting over in a new town with nothing.

Both girls had limited prospects for the future. Their new town offered only basic schooling, and, like many children in impoverished areas, they could not afford school supplies or the extra tutoring that could have helped them succeed. They had little chance of escaping poverty. This lack of resources led to feelings of self-pity and hopelessness.

However, the arrival of GFA World’s Child Sponsorship Program changed everything for them. With donations from program sponsors, the program provided Kaila and Sabinna with food, education support and emotional care. GFA World’s compassionate staff, who had already begun their work in the region, were there to help in the aftermath of the earthquake, providing groceries, helping recover lost items and listening to grieving hearts.

Through sponsorship, Kaila and Sabinna could be enrolled, allowing them to receive nutritious meals, study help and essential school supplies. Kaila says, “The teachers are very loving and kind, and if we don’t understand anything from our school lessons, they are always there to help us.”
