What Are Bible Verses About Giving Food to Others?
Bible verses about giving food to others, such as Matthew 25:35 and James 2:15-17, remind us of Christ’s command to care for the hungry and those in need:
Scripture speaks with a clear, steady voice about feeding the hungry. Across the Law, the Prophets, and the Gospels, providing food to the hungry is never treated as optional but as a clear sign of those who belong to God. Israel was commanded to care for the poor and needy in Deuteronomy 15. The instruction was blunt: “You shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother” (Deuteronomy 15:7 NKJV). Jesus did not merely suggest His followers feed the hungry. He made it one of the clearest proofs of real faith.
- “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in” (Matthew 25:35).
- “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:14-17).
James’s words name a habit that is still common: offering kind words without real help. He calls believers to ask if their faith produces action that meets real needs. Isaiah 58 describes the kind of worship God our Father accepts — not empty ritual but sharing bread with the hungry and bringing the homeless poor into one’s house (Isaiah 58:6–7). What the Father accepts as pure, James later echoes, is visiting orphans and widows in their trouble (James 1:27). In both testaments, true devotion to God cannot be separated from practical care for the vulnerable.
While the biblical call to give is timeless, it’s especially crucial in areas of Africa and Asia where so many are destitute. GFA World gives lifesaving food packages and freshly cooked meals to those who need it most. The scale of hunger in Africa and Asia shows why this work is urgent. United Nations data reports that about 733 million people faced hunger in 2023 — one in every eleven people globally. Africa has the highest prevalence of hunger as a share of population, while Asia is home to the largest number of undernourished people. In regions where GFA World supports field partners, families often survive on a single meal a day, and children are especially vulnerable to the lifelong effects of malnutrition. Local workers embedded in these communities identify at-risk families and deliver food packages containing staples like rice, lentils, and cooking oil — provisions that can sustain a household through the leanest weeks.[1]
GFA pastors and missionaries distribute food and water to children in need. Sahlma,[2] a child in Asia, has been a recipient of this generosity. Poverty and child labor were detrimental to her physical and mental health. However, if Sahlma didn’t work, how would her family eat? GFA World’s staff heard about her situation and invited her to participate in their holistic program for children. The program would provide help like education support, clean water, medical care and nutritious food. For children like Sahlma, a daily meal becomes the gateway to everything else the program offers — children who are fed can learn, grow, and begin to imagine a future beyond survival. Behind each intervention is a deeper truth: Psalm 146 describes God as the One who “executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry” (Psalm 146:7). The psalmist portrays a God who acts on behalf of the hungry, and throughout Scripture, God’s people are called to reflect that same divine concern. Providing a meal declares a person’s worth in the sight of God.
“I am eating such tasty food here,” Sahlma later said of the program, as tears filled her eyes.
The help this program provided relieved the financial burden on the family. Sahlma no longer needs to work and struggle to buy enough food for her family. She receives care, love and encouragement from her teachers! She now has hope for the future! She wants to be a social worker to help children in need, just like she once was. “I want to bring [a] smile to people who are in pain and suffering,” she says. Sahlma’s transformation illustrates the kind of faith the apostle John described: “My little children let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). When a child no longer has to choose between labor and learning, the gift of a meal becomes the gift of a future. Love that is visible and tangible — food on a plate, hope in a child’s eyes — is the faith that Scripture consistently upholds.
The New Testament tells of a moment in Mark 14 when Jesus, dining in Bethany days before His crucifixion, was anointed with costly oil. Some objected that the oil could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus responded, “The poor you have with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good” (Mark 14:7). His words recognized that the chance to serve the needy never vanishes. The question is whether anyone will step up to meet it. Across Scripture, God calls His people to see the hungry and satisfy their need. He calls them to notice the overlooked and act with kindness that moves beyond feeling into real help.
Bible verses about feeding the hungry always point toward action, not merely awareness. Scripture declares, “For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’” The open hand is the biblical posture — not a clenched fist of self-preservation, nor a gesture of pity from a distance, but a hand extended in shared humanity.
