Can You Help Me Understand South Asia, Underprivileged Kids, and What GFA Is Doing in the Area?
GFA World is passionate about helping people in South Asia. Underprivileged kids, widows, leprosy patients and impoverished communities are the main recipients of this help. GFA national missionaries work within communities in South Asia to evaluate needs and recommend solutions. For example, if a community does not have access to a clean water well, the missionary will work to bring them one. These missionaries are from the areas they serve, giving them unique insight into the community’s needs.
“We [want] to … demonstrate practically how very much God loves the people of [South Asia], and especially the poor and needy,” said K.P. Yohannan (Metropolitan Yohan), founder and director of GFA.[1]
Those “poor and needy” include underprivileged kids. Through a child sponsorship model, children and their families receive essentials such as access to clean water, nutritious food, school supplies, medical checkups—whatever is most helpful and needed in the child’s situation. Children in the program also begin to understand they have worth and purpose in the eyes of God.
In addition to the alleviation of financial burden the program provides, the child’s family is also often helped with life-changing gifts. For example, when a family cannot provide for their own needs, GFA may provide a gift of livestock or vegetable seeds to help them feed their family. In other cases, a literacy class is most needed and the ability to read helps men and women qualify for higher paying jobs and opportunities.
GFA World also provides skills training. For example, when a woman is gifted with a sewing machine and tailoring training, she gains a new way of earning income for her family. A simple gift like this can raise a family above the poverty line and help them break the cycle of poverty that may have been occurring for multiple generations. Sometimes all it takes to help a family learn to hope again is one of these simple gifts.
